Update: GSU knows where outage was triggered, working to understand why

Updated at 11:31 a.m.: Greater Sudbury Utilities said about 5,400 customers were impacted by this morning's power outage.

The outage, which lasted only about 30 minutes affected customers from Moonlight to Long Lake and points in between. 

Power was restored in sections with priority given to Health Sciences North and other essential service providers, GSU spokesperson Wendy Watson told Sudbury.com.

The utility knows where the outage was triggered. Crews are now working to figure out why.

Updated at 10:58 a.m.: Greater Sudbury Utilities is now saying, as of 10:51 a.m., that power has been restored. 

Less than 10 minutes ago, the utility tweeted, "And power has been restored. Quick work guys! Thanks for your patience everyone!"

Updated at 10:48 a.m.: Greater Sudbury Utilities is re-routing power to restore electricity to affected parts of the city. The Laurentian area is now back on, but thousands are still without power.

Crews are working on it, the utility said.

Greater Sudbury Utilities has confirmed that a major power outage is affecting thousands of city residents.

The outage stretches from the Moonlight area to Long Lake and all points in between.

"We do not know the cause at this point, however crews are working to figure it out, and we are trying to reroute in sections," the utility stated in an email
