Environmental Public Health Week, running from Jan. 19 to 23, recognizes the hard work of certified public health inspectors and environmental health officers across Canada, and the importance of environmental health programs to our health care system.

To increase the public's knowledge and awareness of the role these front-line professionals play in the health of their communities, the Sudbury & District Health Unit is setting up information displays at the following locations in the City of Greater Sudbury: Tues., Jan. 20 at Laurentian University, Wed., Jan. 21 at Southridge Mall, Thurs., Jan. 22 at the Real Canadian Superstore, Fri., Jan. 23 at the Rainbow Centre.

A public health inspector will be available from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at each location to answer questions from the public.

Information displays will also be set up at the Sudbury & District Health Unit branch offices in Chapleau, Espanola, Mindemoya, and St. Charles.

Public health inspectors and environmental health officers provide services in a number of areas including food safety, air and drinking water quality, outbreak management and prevention of food-borne illnesses.

The health unit is proud of these dedicated professionals, who are committed to promoting and protecting the public health, and continually meeting new environmental challenges that can affect human health, a press release stated.

"Environmental Public Health Week also gives us a great opportunity to encourage students to consider a career in the field," said Adam Ranger, a public health inspector in the health unit's Environmental Health division. "My interest in science and in protecting the environment and public health makes this kind of work ideal for me, and we encourage students to drop by and talk to us," he adds.
