Health unit offers safety advice for used needles

Warmer weather means that citizens might be seeing discarded drug needles under the melting snow

Public Health Sudbury and Districts (PHSD) said with the arrival of spring and the melting of snow, now is the time to be aware that used syringes may be on the ground.

PHSD said that used needles can pose a danger to anyone that does not see them or does not dispose of the needles properly.

The health unit has a webpage devoted to proper disposal of syringes and advises using a sturdy plastic container for storage of any needles that are found.

The webpage further advises that found syringes should be picked with a tool such as pliers or tongs. No one should touch any needle with their bare hands.

PHSD advises that used needles can be taken to health unit offices for disposal or inserted into needle drop boxes at the following locations:

-Elm Place mall, 10 Elm Street, Unit 130, Sudbury, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

-PHSD Main Office, 1300 Paris Street, Sudbury, outdoor drop-off kiosk, accessible at any time.

-Espanola Mall, 800 Centre Street, Unit 100C, Espanola, outdoor drop-off kiosk, accessible at any time.

-Manitoulin Island, 6163 Highway 542, Mindemoya, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

The health unit further advises that other sources of information include calling 311 at the City of Greater Sudbury, and the Sudbury Action Centre for Youth (SACY) at 705-207-2112.
