Three community organizations providing Hepatitis C and HIV/AIDS education and support services will receive a combined $652,364 from the provincial government to assist with increased needs and growing service demands.

Access AIDS Network will receive $644,364 to support their Hep C program, the Sudbury Action Centre for Youth $4,800 to support their Injection Drug Use Outreach Program and the Sudbury and District Health Unit $3,200 to support their Anonymous HIV Testing Program.

“This new funding will make a huge difference to those living with, affected by, or those at risk of Hepatitis C,” Richard Rainville, Executive Director of the Access Aids Network, said in a press release.

“Not only will this funding allow increased access to Hepatitis C treatment, but will enhance other comprehensive services for those affected by this virus. While we continue to assist those presently living with this disease, our goal should also include encouraging the prevention and further spread of Hepatitis C. This funding is certainly a positive step towards our continued efforts.”

In 2010, province-wide, the provincial government provided a total of $60 million to community-based HIV/AIDS education and support programs across the province for people infected and affected by HIV/AIDS, and for those most at risk of acquiring HIV/AIDS.

“With strong roots in the community, these organizations work in partnership to provide essential support services for local residents living with Hepatitis C or HIV/AIDS as well as education and prevention strategies for those most at risk of acquiring the disease,” Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci said.
