Greater Sudbury residents heading to Manitoulin Island for the long weekend may want to get an early start, as Whitefish River First Nation will be blockading Highway 6 between 4 and 10 p.m. on May 21.

The highway will be blocked at Birch Island as the band protests the provincial government's amalgamated provincial and goods and services tax, the harmonized sales tax (HST).

The land Highway 6 is built on is also subject to an unresolved land claim with the province of Ontario.

The blockades will be located at the north end district sign, and the south end Swift Current area.

The band is protesting the loss of its members' tax exemption status, which will happen when the HST takes the place of the PST and GST on July 1.

The band considered different protest options, such as setting up a toll booth and redirecting traffic through the tiny community, according to media reports.

For more information, phone the band office at (705) 285-4335.
