Hospital given $1.2M for learning spaces

The Sudbury Regional Hospital will be able to go ahead with its plan to build additional medical learner spaces after a funding injection of $1.2 million from Queen's Park.

The Sudbury Regional Hospital will be able to go ahead with its plan to build additional medical learner spaces after a funding injection of $1.2 million from Queen's Park.

As an Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC), Sudbury Regional Hospital has additional responsibilities to medical students, greater than that of a regular hospital.

"By providing these spaces, we're helping ensure that we have the resources needed to meet future health care demands in our community," Rick Bartolucci, Sudbury MPP, said in a press release.

"We know that health professionals who are trained here are more likely to pursue their careers and build a life here — which is why we are committed to a localized strategy to train and attract more health care providers."

The hospital's proposed project is a combination of new construction and renovations to existing space. The space would be used to provide students with lockers, workstations, lounges, classrooms, video-conference rooms and on-call rooms.

The hospital is estimating it can host 94 full-time students at full capacity.

“There are many benefits to patient care and to the local economy that are inherent with an academic health sciences network,” Dr. Denis Roy, hospital president and CEO, said. “It begins with the funding to move forward with the design of learner space - but it is limited only by our imaginations.”
