Hospital won’t release info on birth of a New Year’s baby

Like other northern hospitals, Health Sciences North says it’s up to parents to announce the first baby born of the year, though hospitals in Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay have both made New Year’s baby announcements

It will not be officially revealed if a new baby was born in the New Year in Sudbury. Health Sciences North (HSN) responded to an inquiry saying that because of patient confidentiality, no information could be provided with respect to whether a new citizen had been born.

This is in line with the practice from previous years, said the HSN communications office.

A similar position was taken by the North Bay Regional Health Centre this year, which said its first priority is to protect the safety and priority of patients.

In a break from a long tradition, the NBRHC said it would no longer advise the media of the New Year's first baby, but instead, it would be the responsibility of the parents to inform the media on their own.

In Sault Ste. Marie, it was revealed that Angelourd and Mark Ron Chio welcomed their new child, Aeron Marc Chio, at 3:31 a.m. on New Year’s Day at the Sault Area Hospital.

Weighing in at 3 kg (6 pounds, 7 ounces), Baby Aeron is officially the Sault’s New Year’s baby for 2023, which surprised the now mom of two.

“We’re very happy,” Angelourd said. “We definitely didn’t expect to have the first baby of the year.”

Originally from the Philippines, the Chios have lived in the Sault since 2021, said a local news report.

Angelourd works in accounting, while Mark Ron is an aircraft mechanic for Springer Aerospace.

In Thunder Bay, the Regional Health Sciences Centre revealed that mother Kaya Beardy welcomed baby Bowtig Beardy at 1:04 a.m. on Jan. 1.  Photos of the mother and the eight-pound boy were featured on our sister publication, TBNewswatch. The TBRHSC issued a news release advising that mom and the baby were doing fine.

An email inquiry to Timmins and District Hospital was not returned before publication time. No online reports of a new year's baby from Timmins were available.

If you are the parents of the New Year’s baby for the Greater Sudbury region, Sudbury.com would love to meet you and introduce you and your bundle of joy to the community. You can contact us at [email protected].
