Health Sciences North did very well in cutting down a projected $9.6-million deficit for the 2011-2012 financial year, according to the hospital's president and CEO, Dr. Denis Roy.

The public will get a look at the hospital's books at its annual general meeting, which is scheduled to start in the cafeteria at the Ramsey Lake Health Centre at 6 p.m. June 21.

Beyond the financial information, the meeting will also feature reports from Roy, Dr. Chris Bourdon, the hospital's chief of staff, and Russell Boyles, chair of the hospital's board of directors.

“Without going into the details, if we look at the operational budget, it's very good,” Roy told Northern Life after the hospital's monthly board of directors meeting last week.

He said the hospital found savings for the finanacial year ending March 31 by implementing lean management in several departments, meaning the way things were done was closely examined to eliminate waste and improve services.

“We don't necessarily need to fire people or cut in order to be efficient,” Roy said.

Health Sciences North has promised the North East Local Health Integration Network (North East LHIN) that it will completely balance its books by Sept. 30.
