Dr. John Fenton will start his role as Health Sciences North chief of staff next week.

Fenton has been appointed to a three-year term as replaces Dr. Chris Bourdon, whose term expires at the end of June.

Fenton has been a vascular surgeon at HSN since 1994. He has served in numerous capacities over the years, including as president of HSN’s medical staff between 1999 and 2003. Fenton was also a member of the North East Surgical Optimization Task Force and currently sits on the Provincial Taskforce for Vascular Surgery. He is fluent in both English and French.

As chief of staff, Fenton will provide leadership in the implementation of a patient-centred approch to care at HSN in partnership with physicians, HSN leadership, clinical teams and patient advisors. The chief of staff also reports to the board of directors on matters related to the quality of medical care.

“It’s an honour to be selected as chief of staff,” said Fenton.  “I’m looking forward to working with the board, management and my physician peers to provide safe and quality care to the people of Greater Sudbury and northeastern Ontario.”

Fenton was selected after a recruitment process, led by HSN’s board of directors.

“On behalf of the board, I want to congratulate and welcome Dr. Fenton as our new chief of staff. We look forward to working with him in the delivery of quality care to our patients,” said Nicole Everest, chair of the HSN board of directors.

The board has also announced Bourdon will continue to serve as the vice president of medical and academic affairs. In this role, Bourdon is responsible for providing leadership for the medical, teaching and research components of HSN’s academic mission.
