Health Sciences North is up four spots from last year in a national list of the 40 research hospitals in Canada.

In 2014, Health Sciences North just cracked the list in the 40th position, but the hospital climbed to 36th place in 2015.

Each year Research Infosource Inc. compiles the list based on the dollars Canada's hospitals allocate to research.

The 2015 top 40 list uses data from 2014 to rank Canada's various research hospitals.

Despite Health Sciences North's upward move in the rankings, research dollars were down 3.3 per cent in 2014, compared to 2013, according to Research Infosource.

In 2014, the hospital invested $7.4 million in research, while it spent more than $7.6 million in 2013.

Health Sciences North was ranked just below the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, which invested nearly $7.6 million in research activities in 2014.

Toronto's University Health Network topped the list, with an investment of more than $303 million in research activities in 2014.

“Being on this list for the second straight year and improving our position demonstrates that we have earned our place among Canada’s best research hospitals, “ said Dr. Denis Roy, Health Science's North's president and CEO, in a press release. “Research and innovation are the drivers that lead to breakthrough discoveries and improvements in health care, and we’re absolutely committed to using research to improve patient care.”
