Health Sciences North has released architectural drawings of its future Positron Emission Tomography (PET) suite, to be built on stilts at the back of the Ramsey Lake Health Centre.
The PET scanner will be housed in the Nuclear Imaging Department, located on Level 2 of the hospital's Lougheed (South) Tower.
Earlier this month, the Northern Cancer Foundation announced the community has successfully raised the $3.5 million needed to purchase the PET scanner.
Since 2010, there has been an active fundraising effort in the community, led by the Sam Bruno Pet Scan Committee, in partnership with the NCF. Sam Bruno was a Sudbury salesman who died of cancer six years ago. Before he died, he launched a lobbying and fundraising campaign to acquire a PET scan machine for HSN.
The provincial government has pledged $4.6 million toward construction costs for the PET suite and up to $1.6 million in annual operating funding.
Construction of the PET scanner suite and installation of the machine is expected to be complete within 18 months.
