Health Sciences North received more than $277,000 from Greater Sudbury Hydro Friday thanks to its Save on Energy incentives.

The hospital said in a press release it has been quietly upgrading energy-thirsty equipment, replacing lights, motors and system controls over the past two-and-a-half years. Those changes will save the hospital more than $500,00 on energy costs annually.

“Every dollar we save in energy costs can be put back into front-line patient care, “said Dr. Denis Roy, Health Sciences North’s president and CEO, in a press release.

“The facilities management and building services teams have done an outstanding job of making HSN more energy efficient, which makes us more effective for our patients. We’re also very grateful to the Greater Sudbury Hydro EnergySavers for helping us access provincial Save on Energy funding to make this possible.”

The hospital has participated in both retrofit and energy audit programs. The Retrofit Program provides incentives of up to 50 per cent of the cost of installing new energy-efficient equipment such as lighting, motors, and compressors.

The Energy Audit Program covers up to 50 per cent of the cost of an energy audit to identify opportunities to save energy costs.

In the past 2.5 years, Health Sciences North has made numerous energy-saving retrofits to the Sudbury Outpatient Centre, Ramsey Lake Health Centre, and Kirkwood Place.

Together, these energy-saving measures are expected to reduce the hospital’s energy consumption by 3.6 million kilowatt hours (3.6 gigawatt hours) per year, at an estimated annual saving of $504,000.
