The Idylwylde Golf and Country Club will be a-buzz on May 22 with the sound of crowds and electric razors, as clubs pro Paul Schweyer, and several club members, shave their heads to support cancer research.

And they're calling it, fittingly, the Shave for Cancer event.

“Shave for Cancer has its roots in 2006 when we held a similar fundraiser to build a weather shelter on the back nine and raised nearly $10,000,” said Schweyer. “This time its for cancer care in Sudbury and Northeastern Ontario. I'm eager to see how much we can raise.”

The golfers might be in a joking mood, but their cause is no laughing matter.

“Cancer takes and takes and takes, its an ugly disease,” said Tanny Laughren, executive director of the Northern Ontario Cancer Foundation. “Local fundraisers like this can really make a difference. We're very excited to see Paul without hair!”

While happy to help, Schweyer is not quite sure on how to feel about the upcoming hairdo.

“This was really a two-sided challenge,” he said. “It took a lot of effort for me to grow my hair out this long — it's driving me crazy and I am anxious to chop it off. I might not be so anxious to see my bald head.”

To donate to Shave for Cancer call the NCF office at (705) 523-4673 or visit the fundraising website and select “Paul Schweyer Shave for Cancer Research” from the drop-down menu.
