Impact 6/21: Memorial events, soapbox derby this weekend

On Father’s Day, June 21st, 2009, tragedy struck when three teens were killed by an impaired driver while walking while alongside of Regional Road 80, in Hanmer.

Since that fateful day, the families of Caitlin Jelley, Jazmine Houle and Steven Philippe have been working to fight drunk driving and to raise awareness about the crime.

Mayor Brian Bigger has already declared June at Impact 6/21 Memorial Month. But this weekend, upon which the anniversary of the tragedy falls, is particularly meaningful.

The memorial weekend begins with the second annual Impact 6/21 Soapbox Derby Event on Saturday. Registration is at 9 a.m. Saturday morning on Regional Road 80 (on a hill near the memorial site).

Sunday starts with a memorial brunch at Cousin Vinny’s in the Hanmer Valley Shopping Mall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with a portion of the sales being donated to the Impact 6/21 Foundation.

Finally, the fifth annual memorial walk takes place Sunday night, starting at 8 p.m. at the Lion’s Den Ballpark in Hanmer.
 
Guest speakers will bring inspirational messages to begin the evening, following which attendees will proceed to the memorial site, escorted by the Greater Sudbury Regional Police cruisers.
