Injured pup found in Naughton near Atikameksheng Anishnawbek

GoFundMe account set up to help cover costs of injured dog's recovery

On Oct. 31 the Rainbow District Animal Shelter received a young, injured pup from Healing Hearts Lost Pet Search & Recovery.

Shelby, as she has since been named by shelter staff, is estimated to be around two-years-old.

The pup was allegedly abandoned on the side of Municipal Road 55 in Naughton, near the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek territory. Healing Hearts said that the dog had spent several days alone and afraid wandering the area before staff were able to recover her with a live trap.

During her initial assessment by veterinarians, it was revealed that Shelby has possible fractures requiring an arthrodesis procedure as well as two broken canine teeth that will need to be extracted. Shelby has since been stabilized and her x-rays sent to a specialist for further evaluation.

Shelter staff said Shelby's injuries are likely a result of being hit by a car sometime during the day on Oct. 31.

A GoFundMe Campaign has been set-up to help cover the costs of Shelby's recovery, which are estimated to be more than $2,000.

Despite her rescue location, Healing Hearts said that based on her behaviour they do not believe Shelby is from Atikameksheng Anishnawbak or the Naughton area.

Anyone with information on Shelby's owners, or how she came to be in the Naughton area, are asked to contact Rainbow District Animal Services and By-Law Enforcement at 705-673-3647 or 1-800-836-6661.

All information regarding Shelby's ownership or alleged abandonment will be kept in the strictest of confidence.
