To help raise awareness and funds as well as better access to life-saving treatments and care for multiple myeloma, an incurable cancer, Della Krieger and her family will be walking five kilometres at Fielding Memorial Park on Aug. 28*** at 1:30 p.m. Kreiger and her team are hoping to raise her goal of $10,000 for research.

Retired superintendent Della Krieger was no stranger to aches and pains. At 71 years old, she’d accepted the discomforts of aging. But in early 2021, when the pain reached a new unbearable level, Della knew something wasn't quite right.

Following a series of tests, a radiologist confirmed Krieger’s diagnosis: she had multiple myeloma, a little-known and incurable blood cancer.

“I didn’t have a clue what multiple myeloma was,” Kreiger said in a press release. “I broke down into tears. It was such a shock. I couldn’t wrap my head around the diagnosis. I cried a lot those first few months.”

Myeloma Canada’s Multiple Myeloma March is a nation-wide event that raises money and awareness for the disease, while bringing local communities closer together in support of one another, continues the release. The Sudbury Multiple Myeloma March is one of 34+ communities across the country participating in Myeloma Canada’s nation-wide event. For Canadians not located near a physical March or who wish to participate on their own, there is also a virtual March option.

“Every year, we’re getting closer to finding a cure,” states Martine Elias, executive director of Myeloma Canada. “That’s why the funds raised at the Sudbury Multiple Myeloma March are so critical. They’ll help to keep myeloma research moving forward and to improve the lives of Canadians impacted by this devastating disease.”
