Lab accreditation a 'considerable achievement'

Sudbury Regional Hospital's department of laboratory services recently completed its 2010 accreditation review process, which involved meeting more than 450 requirements.

Sudbury Regional Hospital's department of laboratory services recently completed its 2010 accreditation review process, which involved meeting more than 450 requirements.

The laboratory scored a 96 per cent compliance rate, which is their highest score to date, stated a press release from the hospital.

“The high score is a direct reflection of the hard work and dedication that was demonstrated throughout the process by all staff involved,” Dr. Denis Roy, president and CEO of the hospital, said in a press release.

“The accreditation process is an effective tool in ensuring we deliver the highest quality of patient care.”

Lab accreditation is an extensive process involving an on-site review of all laboratory activities including laboratory management function, work place safety, and quality assurance by provincially appointed external expert peer reviewers, the press release said.

It is conducted by the Ontario Laboratory Accreditation (OLA) section of Quality Management Program – Laboratory Services (QMP-LS).

The assessment team responsible for reviewing the HRSRH Lab noted state-of-the-art analytical platforms, effective workflow, appropriate ventilation and control measures, a team-oriented environment, an exemplary health and safety program and well-positioned satellite areas for Phlebotomy.

“Successful accreditation, and all the work that comes with it, is a considerable achievement for our hospital,” Dr. Denis Bonin, laboratory medical director, said.

“We are extremely proud of all the laboratory staff and management. Each and every one is deserving of our congratulations and thanks for their hard work and dedication to the care of our patients.”
