The Labourers’ International Union of North America, (LIUNA) Local 493 in Sudbury will receive $282,000 from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) to construct a new training facility for skilled workers, Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci announced Friday.

“This is a terrific opportunity for those looking to enter the lucrative world of skilled trades,” said Bartolucci. “This project will respond to our community’s growing need for skilled labourers at a time when the construction industry is very active.”

The investment will help construct the new 1,800 sq. ft. modular classroom building and an additional 7,500 sq. ft. facility to provide hands-on training to individuals with career interests in industrial, commercial, sewer and water, pipeline, masonry, road construction and utility sectors.

The project will also result in the hiring of one custodian and four instructors who will provide practical training on a year-round basis.

“The need to have highly trained individuals involved in construction in Sudbury and throughout northeastern Ontario is an absolute necessity, as witnessed by the amount of work being performed in the area,” said Mike Ryan, business manager, LIUNA Local 493.  “I would like to thank the provincial government for supporting our vision for this much needed training center which will help meet the needs of the industry.”

This announcement follows one made last January when LIUNA Local 493 received $277,789 for equipment through the McGuinty government’s Skills Training Infrastructure Program.  This brings our government’s total investment for this project to $559,789.

“The McGuinty government is committed to helping develop opportunities so that local workers and young people have the resources needed to build prosperous careers in our community,” concluded Bartolucci.  “By continuing to invest in apprentices and skilled workers we are helping to provide the building blocks for a strong workforce in Sudbury now, and for generations to come.”
