A local company is providing one more option for Greater Sudbury residents in the market for home Internet and phone service.

Sunwire started in 2009 as a local software development firm that built custom applications for a variety of customers.

One of those custom projects was an Internet-based phone system, which marked the beginning of a transition for the company.

In mid-2014 it started to offer its phone service, and Internet services for local businesses, and last fall the company expanded to the residential market.

“It's on fire,” said Alex Levesque, Sunwire's vice-president of sales.

While Sunwire still designs custom software for existing clients, the company is not accepting any new customers and has shifted its focus to telecom services.

Like many smaller Internet service providers, Sunwire does not have its own infrastructure, but instead buys wholesale access to established infrastructure – from Eastlink in Sunwire's case.

Sunwire customers may be using Eastlink lines, but they are on Sunwire's network and accessing their bandwidth.

The company offers a number of home Internet plans with no download caps, ranging from 20 Mbps download and two Mbps upload for $59.95 a month, to 200 Mbps download and 10 Mbps upload for $159.95 a month.

Levesque said Sunwire currently offers its home service across Greater Sudbury, but has plans to expand to other parts of northeastern Ontario in the future.
