A local physician, Dr. Miguel Bonin, is alleged to have sexually abused two of his patients, according to information posted on the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario's website.

“It is alleged that Dr. Bonin sexually abused two patients, and committed acts relevant to the practice of medicine that, having regard to all the circumstances, would reasonably be regarded as disgraceful, dishonourable or unprofessional,” the information on the website stated.

The allegations have been referred to the college's discipline committee. No date has yet been set for the hearing, according to media reports.

As of April 29, the college has imposed practice restrictions against Bonin, the college's website said.

Bonin must not examine female patients, except with the presence of a monitor approved by the college. A sign must be posted in his office notifying patients of these practice restrictions.

The monitor “is required to carefully observe all physical examinations of all female patients, including but not limited to internal examinations of female patients,” and is also required to keep a log of all female patient encounters, the college's website said.

Bonin must also submit to unannounced inspections of his office, practice and patient charts by a college representative “for the purposes of monitoring and enforcing his compliance with the terms of this order.”

Greater Sudbury Police Service's staff sgt. Joe Williams said he was unaware if a criminal investigation had been started.
