Want a chance to see the Sudbury-shot film The Road to Tophet? You're in luck.

The film will be screened twice at Sudbury Theatre Centre June 27, at both 7 and 9:30 p.m.

The fast-paced crime thriller tells the story of Charlie (Samuel Thivierge) who smuggles drugs across the American border near Sault Ste. Marie.

He decides to get out of the business, but his boss Rick (Matt Connors, Swearnet, the Trailer Park Boys Movie) has other ideas and sets him up to lose a shipment. Charlie enlists the help of of his friend Johnny from Sudbury (played by Axel Green, Freddie vs. Jason) who shows up with a bunch of gambling debts and one bad idea that leads them both down the Road to Tophet.

"The movie's a lot of fun and a hot bed of up and coming talent," said director Steve Schmidt.

When Canadian actor Adam Beach happened to see an advance cut of the Sudbury-shot crime/action feature, The Road to Tophet - he knew he had to get involved.

"It happened right here in Sudbury," said actor/producer Axel Green. "He was in town shooting another movie. He approached me and offered to voice the Windego story that plays over the film's action.”

The film is the passion project of Schmidt and Green who long dreamt of making a movie that was true to their northern Ontario roots but with an emphasis on quality production and great story-telling.

"It's a popcorn movie with a message," said Green.

The Sudbury screenings are a fund-raiser for the Sudbury Indie Cinema - a cause close to the hearts of the the filmmakers.

"It's important to have venues that can accommodate work outside the Hollywood system," said Schmidt. "Films like ours have a natural audience in northern Ontario. We want to connect with that audience and we hope others can too."

Featuring a cast and crew from across Canada, including Beach (currently shooting the DC Comics blockbuster Suicide Squad), the film also features Sudbury talent: Matthew Heiti, Steve Gagne, Jocelyn Dotta and Callam Rodya.

Rodya's short film, Beautiful Monster, starring Jocelyn Dotta, will open the night. The piece recently won the CTV Best in Shorts Competition.

The screening of this film is an 18+ event.

Tickets, which cost $15, are available at brownpapertickets.com, at Fromagerie Elgin and at Gloria's Restaurant.
