After being nominated Wednesday night to carry the NDP banner in Sudbury in the October federal election, Paul Loewenberg spoke with confidence about his chances.

“It's a great team, we have a lot of know-how and we've won a lot of elections in the last few years and we're going to win this one in October,” said Loewenberg, who came close to beating long-time Liberal MPP Rick Bartolucci in 2011.

When challenged to provide reason as to why he will make a good MP and why voters should consider him come October, the operations manager at the Laughing Buddha and Townehouse Tavern was frank and to the point.

“I'm a hard worker and I think that anybody who has known me from my work downtown and with Northern Lights Festival Boreal for the past 15 years knows that I will put in any hours that it takes to get a job done to the best of our capabilities and best of our resources,” he said.

The Leo W. Gerard Hall at the USW Union hall was packed with NDP supporters, and the raucous crowd chanted “Paul” after his name was announced, edging out fellow nominee Stephanie Harris.

“I'm honoured to be selected by the membership of the party,” said Loewenberg. “It's been a long run to get to know them all and sign up New Democrats. We wanted to find people who identify with the NDP and we brought them to the room and we had a good democratic nomination.”

Loewenberg congratulated his colleague Stephanie Harris on a good campaign and said it felt like it was a close race.

“We don't know what the number (of votes) was,” said Loewenberg. “It was a close room and Stephanie ran a great campaign and I think she is a valuable asset to the NDP team and I'm looking forward to working with her down the road.”

He said his October election campaign will largely be rooted in the need to comfort the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable.

In other words, helping those who need it by bringing their issues to those who can make the change.

“We need to be helping those people who are the most vulnerable,” said Loewenberg.

He brought up the issues of minimum wage and daycare, with the candidate driving home the point that he will push for $15 an hour minimum wage and $15 a day daycare.

“Life is not comfortable for much of Canada's population with the way that this country is being steered,” said Loewenberg. “Things can get better and I want to see to it that they do.”
