After 35 years as a bluecoat, Julie Moskalyk is retiring from Science North.

A longtime member of the senior executive leadership team, the science centre announced the retirement of the science director at the end of February.

“She began her journey with Science North in 1985 as a teen volunteer contributing to the assembly of the fin whale skeleton, a pivotal exhibit in the center,” a Science North press release states. “Following completion of her Bachelor of Science in Biology, Julie pursued her passion for public science communication, dedicating her work to inspiring visitors to engage in STEM in their everyday lives across Northern Ontario and beyond.”

The release stated Moskalyk spearheaded a number of projects at the science centre, including the establishment of the F. Jean McLeod Butterfly Gallery in 2000, developing Science North's first traveling exhibition "Discovering Chimpanzees: The Remarkable World of Jane Goodall " in 2002, and “ The Science of Ripley's Believe It or Not " traveling exhibition in 2013. She was also involved in “major renewal projects” at the facility.

The release states Moskalyk had a commitment to environmental advocacy and “championed” climate action efforts at Science North.

“Julie's contributions have left an indelible mark on Science North and Dynamic Earth,” the release states. “Her leadership, innovative ideas and wealth of knowledge have been instrumental in shaping the institutions. As she embarks on her retirement journey starting March 31st, 2024, Science North expresses heartfelt gratitude to Julie for her decades of dedication and passion, which have played a pivotal role in the growth and success of the science centers.”
