LU honours exceptional students

A reception was held at Laurentian University Thursday to honour the 2006-2007 Deans’ Scholars and Millennium Awards recipients.

A reception was held at Laurentian University Thursday to honour the 2006-2007 Deans’ Scholars and Millennium Awards recipients.

Deans’ Entrance Scholarships
Five scholarships were presented to first-year Laurentian University students who demonstrated academic excellence and exceptional leadership in their school and community. The students are nominated by their secondary school principal.

The scholarships are valued at $5,000, renewable for four years, and the students also receive mentorship from the dean of the faculty in which they are enrolled, are guaranteed a single room in residence, and have their own study carrel in the J.N. Desmarais Library.

This year’s recipients include:
- Geneviève Porter (École secondaire Notre-Dame-des-Grands-Lacs in Sault-Ste-Marie)
- Jennifer Levin Bonder (Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School )
- Alyssa Caverson (Marymount Academy in Sudbury)
- Amélie Giroux (Collège Notre-Dame)
- Katie Goggins (Lockerby Composite School)
 

Millenium Excellence In-Course Awards
This award is given to students who have not been previously recognized with a substantial merit scholarship. They have been specifically created for those students who, after enrolment in a post-secondary program, begin to demonstrate qualities of leadership, community involvement, innovation and academic achievement that inspire others, be it on campus or in their community.

This year’s recipients are:
- Jean-Maxime L. Bourgouin
- Véronique Sylvain
- Christine Prévost
- Alain Lauzon
- Brittany Duchene
- Meghan Cox.

Jean-Maxime Bourgouin received a $5,000 one-year renewable scholarship, while the other recipients received $4,000 non-renewable scholarships.


Millenium Excellence Awards
This year, six first-year Laurentian students received the new Millenium Excellence Awards, which are given to students across Canada who demonstrate exceptional merit through superior academic performance, active involvement in the betterment of their communities and a commitment to seeking innovative solutions to old problems. Each scholarship is valued at $4,000.

The recipients for 2006/2007 are:

- Yunni Jeong
- Parul Kumar
- Jennifer Levin Bonder
- Mikelle Ménard
- Geneviève Porter
