Ten Laurentian University students are looking to raise funds to help them take part in what they consider to be an experience of a lifetime.
The Bachelor of Education students have been working with Canada World Youth's (CWY) Global Lerner Program to organize a trip to Ecuador, in which they will spend three weeks, from Aug. 1 to 21, with an Ecuadorian host family in the communities of Las Tunas and Puerto Rico. There, students will volunteer on community based projects and participate in cultural excursions.
The only hurdle for these students is the cost of the program and travel expenses, which comes to almost $2,740 each, which includes transportation, food, lodging, and insurances.
“We're looking for ways to fundraise,” said Laura Lettoretti, one of the students organizing the trip. “So far we have been selling fudge given to us at a good price from Northwest Fudge Factory and are looking into other items to sell to make money.”
The experience will provide students with a deeper understanding of issues relating to the indigenous peoples of Ecuador, as well as Spanish language classes, they said. Students will also be taken on cultural excursions throughout the country.
Canada World Youth is a not-for-profit organization that aims to prepare young people to become global citizens through international educational programs. The group has more than 35 years of experience in designing international educational programs.
