The bright yellow flock didn't have to race through Lily Creek because of construction this year, but the rubber fowl still managed to help a variety of Sudbury organizations.

Nearly 10,000 tickets were sold for the 17th annual Lucky Duck Dash, hosted by the Rotary Club of Sudbury Sunrisers. Laurentian University President Dominic Giroux pulled the winning duck from the flock at Rotary Park on May 15, filling in for Greater Sudbury Mayor John Rodriguez.

Deb Sullivan from Hanmer had her name attached to the lucky duck, and took home the grand prize of $10,000. Marilyn Schroder won $1,000, Jen Theriault won $500, and Jillian Nadjiwan picked up a one-year membership at the Cambrian College gym.

Duck Mistress Sylvie Gaskin said the event was a success, “despite all the (economic) challenges” facing Sudbury residents this year.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Northern Cancer Research Foundation, the Sudbury Therapuetic Riding Centre, Rotary Park, Pet Save and the ParkSide Older Adult Centre.

The rubber ducks for the event, which was sponsored by NorthernLife.ca, were donated by Penguin ASI.
