A Sudbury man has reported a scary encounter Tuesday night near the Adanac trail area in the north end of the city. He says two suspects in hoodies shot at him, although Greater Sudbury Police say that's still not certain.

According to the man's Facebook post, he heard loud popping noises outside his home, and saw two men in hoodies. Thinking they were trying to scare his dog with fireworks, he chased them into a trail connected to Adanac.

“The two men (were) standing at the top of the hill, shuffling something in their hands,” he wrote. “I (saw) one man lift his hand and fire a pistol directly at me, then again another three or four times, hearing the bullets go into the bushes.”

Fortunately, he wasn't hurt, but he said the suspects managed to damage “the windows and headlights out on the neighbour's car.”

Greater Sudbury Staff Sgt. Craig Maki confirmed Thursday the force received a call after midnight Tuesday about an incident in the King Street area of the city. However, he said there is no conclusive evidence firearms were involved.

"The call came in shortly after midnight on the seventh of July,” Maki said. "It started as a mischief complaint ... about two males who had broken windows on a car on King Street. A neighbour saw it and chased the suspects up to the Adanac trail area.

"He heard two popping sounds and stopped chasing them."

However, while the man reported he believed the suspects were shooting at him, that hasn't been determined yet either way.

"No gun was seen, so we don't know whether it was a firecrackers or what it was,” Maki said. "So we don't know at this juncture whether or not the sounds that was heard by the person chasing the suspects was firearm related."

Police towed the damaged car and a forensic examination showed no indication the windows had been shot out with a firearm, he added.

"We would know that,” he said. “There would be evidence there that would show (the damage) was done by a gun. It was not consistent with a firearm."

Maki said it's still an active investigation.
