In July 2017, Scott Wheeler of St. George, Ontario, was visiting family on Manitoulin Island when he slipped and fell backwards from a 30-foot cliff, high above the Mississagi Straits on the western side of the island.

He struck a submerged rock and injured his back, forcing him to spend weeks recovering at Health Sciences North. Surgeons inserted an artificial joint and steel rod into his back. He suffered internal bleeding and infection, and spent more than two weeks in an induced coma.

His parents spent weeks in Sudbury at their son’s bedside.

When Overtime Sports Bar and Grill owner Attilio Langella read about the family’s troubles, he knew he could help. Since the family (who are fellow restauranteurs) was from out of town, Langella reached out to them through the media and offered his hospitality: the family was provided complimentary food and drinks while Wheeler was in hospital recovering.

This past week, Wheeler stopped by Overtime to thank Langella personally for his generosity and kindheartedness.

That’s what Greater Sudbury hospitality is all about.
