Markstay Public School students rose to the occasion when they were asked to participate in the Christmas Food Drive.

A modest goal of 150 cans was set, and in eight days, the students responded with 2,882 items, including food, gently-used clothing and toys. The Grade 7 and 8 class brought in more than 1,300 items alone.

"All of the students truly displayed the spirit of the season," said Markstay Public School principal Stephen Winckel.

Some of the items will be put into Christmas baskets for families in need. The balance will be donated to the Markstay Food Bank.

Grade 7 and 8 students were scheduled to deliver items on Wednesday, Dec. 17 to the Markstay Food Bank, which is located at 17 Church St. in Markstay.
