Mayor Brian Bigger noted Dave Kilgour's dedication to community and his vision for growth an development in a statement issued late Sunday night on the passing of the former Ward 7 councillor.

Prior to serving as the councillor for Ward 7, Kilgour was mayor of the town of Capreol.

"I would like to express my heartfelt condolences on the passing of Dave Kilgour; former teacher, city and town councillor and former Mayor of the town of Capreol," Bigger wrote.

"Dave's decades of service to our community exemplify the dedication and vision he brought to each organization he was a part of in Capreol, Greater Sudbury and beyond. It is that dedication to community and vision for growth and development that shine brightest on his legacy of public service.

"He has touched the lives of so many in Capreol and across Greater Sudbury."

Other elected officials also paid tribute to Kilgour this past weekend.

Ward 7 Coun. Mike Jakubo, who defeated Kilgour in the 2014 municipal election, noted Kilgour's work ethic in a post on Facebook.

"I know that Dave worked tirelessly for the best interests of Capreol, the City of Greater Sudbury and all of Northern Ontario through his decades of public service," Jakubo wrote on Facebook.

Ward 10 Coun. Fern Cormier touched on Kilgour's sense of community.

“Sad at the passing of another community leader who will not be forgotten by the residents of Greater Sudbury,” Cormier wrote on Facebook. “Dave Kilgour always made time to chat, had a great sense of humour and cared deeply for our community. All who knew him will always remember him fondly.”

Kilgour first served as a councillor and mayor for the Town of Capreol, then as a regional councillor and finally as councillor in the amalgamated City of Greater Sudbury.

He last served as Ward 7 Coun. from 2010 to 2014. He sought re-election in the 2014 municipal election but was defeated by Jakubo.

In 2012, Kilgour stood as a witness before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Natural Resources, where he testified in favour of Greater Sudbury playing a significant role in the development of the Ring of Fire.

Cliffs Natural Resources would later announce its intent to build a $1.8-billion smelter complex in Kilgour's Capreol riding, however that project has yet to materialize.

In 2013, Kilgour was elected to the board of directors of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.
