Maytag is recalling about 160,000 dishwashers after an electrical failure in the heating element sparked at least 12 fires.

According to the Electrical Safety Authority, Maytag is voluntarily recalling the units, which were sold between February 2006 to April 2010 from between $250 and $900.

No one was injured in any of the 12 fires, but one report cited extensive kitchen damage from the fire.

The recall includes Maytag, Amana, Jenn-Air, Admiral, Magic Chef, Performa by Maytag and Crosley brands of dishwashers with plastic tubs and certain serial numbers. The serial numbers are printed on a label located inside the plastic tub on a tag near the left side of the door opening.

The dishwashers were made with black, white, silver, bisque, and stainless streel front panels.

If you have one of the effected models, you should stop using the dishwasher immediately and advise everyone in the home to do so, disconnect the electrical supply to the dishwasher, contact Maytag to confirm the dishwasher in question is recalled, and schedule a free in-home repair.

The press release notes consumers should contact Maytag directly, rather than bring affected units back to the retailer. Retailers are not prepared to take the units back.
