Meagan McGrath, the 30 year old Sudbury native and mountain climber who successfully completed one version of the Seven Summits, is set to climb the Carstensz Pyramid located in the Indonesian province of Papua.  Carstensz Pyramid is the highest mountain in Oceania (4,884 metres / 16, 023 feet), and is considered by some to be one of the Seven Summits.

The Seven Summits represent the seven highest peaks on seven continents. Due to different interpretations of continental borders, there is some dispute as to whether Mount Kosciuszko, or the Carstensz Pyramid, should represent the highest summit in Oceania (including Australia).

If McGrath is successful in her climb of the Carstensz Pyramid she will become the only Canadian female, and the first Canadian Forces member, to achieve both versions of the Seven Summits.

McGrath will arrive in Jakarta, Indonesia on Dec. 1 to begin her week-long adventure.  Summit day is scheduled for Dec. 4.

“This is a unique part of the world and a different mountain.  Carstensz Pyramid is technically the hardest of the Seven Summits,” said McGrath in a news release.   “I take advantage of every opportunity, and make opportunities happen for myself. I love climbing mountains and I don’t want to stop!”
