McIntaggart steps down as NDP candidate

Gerry McIntaggart, the federal New Democrat Party candidate for Sudbury, has announced he will not be running in the next federal election due to family reasons.

Gerry McIntaggart, the federal New Democrat Party candidate for Sudbury, has announced he will not be running in the next federal election due to family reasons.

“It’s one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make,” said McIntaggart, in a release. “I have two families - my own immediate family and the NDP.  At this time, my family at home needs me and I have decided to step down to spend more time at home.”

“Sudbury needs an MP who will stand up for the hardworking people and families of this city who contribute so much to the province and to Canada.” said McIntaggart.

“I will support the next federal NDP candidate who will go to Ottawa to join a vibrant Northern NDP caucus and give Sudbury the strong voice in parliament it truly deserves.”

McIntaggart served on city and regional council and championed the health of Sudbury workers and families before running as the NDP’s federal candidate.

Gerry increased the federal NDP’s support in Sudbury to 32 per cent, leaving the NDP poised to win the next federal election.

Local NDP members and supporters say Gerry was a dedicated and hard working candidate and he will be missed.

"Gerry has given so much to the city of Sudbury and shown such commitment to the needs of the working people. While we are sad to see him go, we are happy he will have more time with his family," said Richard Eberhardt, Sudbury NDP riding president.
