Meals On Wheels is celebrating 45 years of service in the community.

An open house is planned for Nov. 29 from 3–8 p.m. at 1127 Bancroft Dr.

Forty-five years ago, it all began as a grassroots pilot project with the intent of keeping people independent in their homes by supplying daily hot nutritious meals. Today, Meals On Wheels in Sudbury serves more than 35,000 delicious and healthy meals annually.

Nov. 29 also marks Giving Tuesday, a movement in Canada for giving and volunteering. Following Cyber Monday, which is viewed as the opening day of the giving season — a time when charities, businesses and individuals come together to support causes and think about others.

Refreshments, entertainment, and a tour of the agency will be available, as well as door prizes.

“This is an opportunity to rally and support your community by Giving on Tuesday,” said a news release.

“As a leading community support health service provider, Meals On Wheels (Sudbury) supports the nutritional needs of our neighbours, including those who are convalescing, persons with physical and mental disabilities, seniors and individuals with chronic or terminal illness, as well as many other.  Donations received are used to support enhancing client programming and delivery.”
