In the wake of allegations made by a physician trained at the school, the Northern Ontario School of Medicine says it “strongly refutes any claim” that the woman was suspended for reporting claims of sexual harassment.

Dr. Ana Safavi said in a press release issued Wednesday she was suspended from the Northern Ontario School of Medicine’s (NOSM) Internal Medicine residency program on Feb. 2, after she disclosed that she had been sexually harassed by a faculty leader in her training program.

NOSM dean Dr. Roger Strasser responded to her claims in a short written statement issued Wednesday.

“The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) does not tolerate sexual harassment and is committed to ensuring the safety of our learners, staff and faculty,” the statement reads.

“We treat allegations of sexual harassment very seriously, and will do everything necessary to ensure that any allegations brought forward are dealt with thoroughly.

“NOSM strongly refutes any claim that NOSM suspended Dr. Safavi for coming forward and reporting claims of sexual harassment.

“NOSM’s Policy requires that sexual harassment complaints be treated confidentially, and until our investigation into this matter is complete, NOSM will not be commenting further.”
