The government of Ontario is investing $3,724,000 toward the transfer of mental health programs from the Northeast Mental Health Centre (NEMHC) to Sudbury Regional Hospital to help mental health patients get the care they need closer to home.

The government of Ontario is investing $3,724,000 toward the transfer of mental health programs from the Northeast Mental Health Centre (NEMHC) to Sudbury Regional Hospital to help mental health patients get the care they need closer to home.

“We're committed to helping Northeastern Ontarians, including Sudburians, get the mental health supports they need in the communities where they live,” said Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci in a news release.

“This transfer represents a great step in our government's plan to improve local governance of mental health and addiction programs.”

According to the news release, Bartolucci announced on Jan. 4, 2007 that the government had adopted recommendations from the Ken White report, and that local mental health and addiction programs would be transferred from NEMHC to hospitals in Sudbury and North Bay.

“We will continue to be involved throughout the transition period to help ensure that services are not disrupted," said NEMHC president and CEO Bob Cunningham in the same news release.

"We look forward to continuing this productive relationship with Sudbury and with the other major centres in Northeastern Ontario, as we concentrate on providing high quality specialized mental health services to the entire region.”
