Mighty Canadian Doughnuts is closing its doors for the final time this Saturday, Dec. 17, due to a slow down in business, according to the bake shop's Facebook page.
A post from Dec. 14 stated, "It is with a heavy heart we announce the permanent closure of Mighty Canadian Doughnuts. We thank all our loyal customers who stuck with us over the past year, but unfortunately there just wasn't enough of you to cover the high operating costs of doing business in Sudbury. From all of us at MCD, we hope everyone has a safe and happy new year."
The shop on Barry Downe Road opened on Feb. 9 to rave reviews and even better business as store manager Ashley McCabe could barely keep the shelves full due to high demand.
“I thought it would be a bit slow to start," said McCabe in an interview with Sudbury.com back in February.
"I figured we could sell about 200 doughnuts per day. We've been selling closer to 600 ... and we could probably be doing more, but we're just a bit limited with the space we have, because our kitchen isn't that big.”
The announcement of the shop's closing has been met with an outpouring of sentiment on social media. The Facebook announcement received more than 200 comments, many asking whether there will still be any way to get the doughnuts, even without a storefront location.
Jennifer Boucher commented, "This makes me so sad, after your doughnuts I know I wil never eat a Tims again. Please let us know if you wil do private orders."
Mighty Canadian Doughnuts responded, "We may just have to, keep following our page, if we launch private orders we will post it here first."
Many other comments filtered in throughout the day in the wake of the announcement, mostly ranging from, "this is sad news, sorry to hear it," to, "prices were fine, location was bad as can be," and, "That's so unfortunate, I wish you all the best in future endeavours."
Mighty Canadian Doughnuts sent out another Facebook message at around 3 p.m. Dec. 14, thanking those who sent their regards.
"Thank you all for your kind words today. Please join us Saturday December 17th for our last and FINAL DAY. Please use this opportunity to use up any gift cards you might have, and enjoy the last treats from Mighty Canadian Doughnuts."
The store will be open during its regular hours (8 a.m. - 6 p.m.) until Dec. 17.
