Mike Commito — who, by the way, happens to be a former Sudbury.com columnist — has been chosen as the new director of applied research at Cambrian College.

“We’re very proud to have Mike take on this role here at Cambrian College,” said Cambrian president Bill Best. “Mike brings extensive knowledge, expertise and work ethic to this role. Cambrian has been a leading college across Canada, ranking in the Top 50 of schools for applied research, and tops in Northern Ontario. We’re relying on Mike to keep up that momentum.”

Commito has been part of Cambrian College’s Applied Research department as a developer since October 2016. During that time, he has been instrumental in securing funding which allows faculty and student researchers to work with industry partners on various R&D projects.

Prior to joining Cambrian, Commito was the research co-ordinator at Northern Policy Institute. He holds a PhD from McMaster University.

“Since coming to Cambrian, Mike has been a tremendous asset to our applied research team,” adds Kristine Morrisey, Cambrian’s Vice-President International, Finance and Administration, and Applied Research. “We’re building up our research bench strength with expert faculty and staff. Cambrian is a college that is focused on success and we’re fortunate to have Mike on the team to help grow our capacity in the ever-evolving research ecosystem.”

“Cambrian is the R&D arm for small and medium sized companies, and it means a great deal for our faculty and student researchers to be involved in solving real challenges that industry is facing today” adds Dr. Commito. “We have some very exciting projects underway, and I’m looking forward to growing Cambrian’s reputation as a leading applied research institution in Canada.

Outside of his work at Cambrian, Commito is also a passionate and published writer. He is the author of Hockey 365 and is the team historian for the Sudbury Wolves.
