The Ministry of Transportation is installing an overhead beacon at a Highway 17/69 bypass that intersects with Southview Drive. Two crashes have happened near the intersection where drivers heading east can turn left onto Southview Drive. Google Street View image.

After bringing up issues regarding the intersection of Southview Drive and the Highway 17/69 bypass nearly a year ago, Nickel Belt MPP France Gélinas said the Ministry of Transportation is installing an overhead flashing beacon to warn drivers.

Gélinas said there have been two serious crashes at the intersection, where drivers heading east can turn left onto Southview Drive.

“Both of them, according to reports, had to do with people not familiar with the highway, who did not know you can stop,” she said.

When her constituents raised concerns about the bypass she first pushed the government to speed up the planned four-laning of that section of road to make it safer.

But because the time frame for four-laning remains undetermined, Gélinas said a more immediate solution was necessary to warn drivers about the left-hand turns.

The Ministry of Transportation decided to install a flashing light ahead of the intersection, and Gélinas said work has already started to install the overhead beacon.

It should be completed later this fall, she said.
