A group of St. Charles College senior French Immersion students got to experience French culture and cuisine first-hand recently during a trip to Montreal.

Teachers Jessica Demore and Richard Emond took their students to the Quebec city for four days.

The group explored beautiful Old Montreal, where they were took part in a Ghost Tour, la grande roue overlooking the city, and La Ronde amusement park.

Students shopped in many boutiques and devoured delicious poutine and churros. They attended a dinner theatre pirate show at Auberge du Dragon Rouge and also participated in the community play “Rough Justice.”

Some students visited McGill and Ottawa universities. They shopped until they dropped, communicated in French, and overall had a fabulous time exploring French culture.

This trip was made possible partially due to a $1,000 grant from the Canadian Heritage Foundation, which was accepting applications for its Bilingual Advantage funds.

Teachers were invited to apply for this grant by creating projects which would directly engage students from French immersion schools in grades 7 to 12 in bilingual activities that would take place outside the classroom.

The objective of the grant is to encourage bilingualism in school and in the community. Projects were granted funding based on student engagement, outside of classroom experiences in a second language and financial need.
