Greater Sudbury reached another record heat level this week, this time for Dec. 24. But the entire month of December has been unseasonably warm thanks to a Super El Nino this year which has caused, among other weather irregularities, minor flooding on parts of Notre Dame on Dec. 15. File photo.
While it may not be evident due to strong winds, Greater Sudbury reached another record heat level this week, this time for Dec. 24.

The high of 5 C on Thursday beats the previous record for the city on Dec. 24, when the mercury reached 2.4 C in 1964.

Dec. 23 also shattered past records, with a high of 13 C, more than doubling the previous record of 5.6 C, set in 1957 and again in 2012.

Meteorologists have attributed this year's record high winter temperatures, at least in part, to the Super El Nino – a band of warm ocean water that develops in the central and east-central equatorial Pacific.
