The 134 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Admiral Mountbatten’s efforts to restore their Sail Centre boathouse got a boost this month from Le Club Richelieu in Sudbury.
On Dec. 4, René Quesnelle, past president Club Richelieu in Sudbury, presented a cheque to the club for $3,000 toward the effort. The club raised the funds by its members volunteering their time at Delta Bingo.
The Sail Centre needs extensive work, the corps said in a news release. It requires work on the roof supports and a new roof, as well as new washroom fixtures, new lighting inside and out, replacement of sliding doors, a new heating system and internal repairs due to water damage. “Other work planned includes improvements to the landscaping, a larger dock and a new flagpole,” the corps said. “A plaque honoring all those who have contributed to this project will be displayed proudly in our refurbished Sail Centre.”
The club thanked Club Richelieu and current president, Ron Gladu, for the support.
The Navy League Sail Centre is an integral part of the Sea Cadet and Navy League Cadet Corps programs in the Sudbury region. It is also used by other northern Ontario Sea cadet corps, including North Bay, Timmins, Manitoulin and Sault Ste Marie.
“The programs trains cadets in seamanship, sailing, small boat safety and beginner level motorized boat operations. Our cadets range in age of nine to 18 years old. There is no cost to the cadets for the programs.”
The Navy League Sail Centre is located across on Ramsey Lake across from Science North. It has been the sailing hub for RCSCC Admiral Mountbatten and NLCC Sudbury since 1956.
RCSCC Admiral Mountbatten is accepting donations to the Sail Centre project. For information on how to donate, please contact the corps at 705-523-4612, or message the club through its Facebook page.
