Municipal voter turnout goes up

City officials said more people voted in this year's municipal election than the last one in 2006. There were 115,318 eligible voters registered and 57,373 voters cast their ballot. That represents a voter turn out of 49.75 per cent.

City officials said more people voted in this year's municipal election than the last one in 2006.

There were 115,318 eligible voters registered and 57,373 voters cast their ballot. That represents a voter turn out of 49.75 per cent.

In the 2006 city election, the voter turnout was 43.17 per cent, with 55,161 voters casting their ballots.

“It was the mayoral race,” Angie Haché, Greater Sudbury chief returning officer, said. The tightly contested race between Marianne Matichuk and incumbent Mayor John Rodriguez could have spurred more participation, she said.

But the advance polls in four shopping malls also boosted the advance poll count, she said.

“That was the first time we tried that and it was very popular,” she said.

There were concerns that voter turnout could be lower since two councillors, in Ward 1 and Ward 5, were acclaimed.
