NDCA still looking for youth board member

The Nickel District Conservation Authority (NDCA) is still actively seeking a youth/student representative for its board.

The Nickel District Conservation Authority (NDCA) is still actively seeking a youth/student representative for its board.

Paul Sajatovic, general manager and secretary-treasurer of the NDCA, said this is the first time the board has looked into adding a youth representative.

“We feel with the number of programs and initiatives we undertake including the environmental educational programs at Lake Laurentian and emerging issues like climate change...that it would be very beneficial and enriching to bring that kind of dynamic to our board,” he said. “School boards do have student trustees so it would be somewhat analogous of that.”

Students have to be 18 years of age or older and Sajatovic said the board meets once a month.

“The board...gives direction to staff to implement programs and priorities,” he said. “They would also have the opportunity to possibility to work with a couple of the other boards that we have (including) our conservation foundation or perhaps specifically related to the Lake Laurentian program.”

If a student or youth is interested in applying or is looking for more information, they can contact Sajatovic at 705-674-5249 ext. 203.

Four citizens who aren't students were appointed to the NDCA board at the city's nominating committee meeting on Jan. 19.

Six fence viewers were appointed as fence viewers as well. Angie Haché, Greater Sudbury city clerk, said fence viewers help neighbours come to an agreement when deciding to build a fence between two properties.

“What we would do is send out three fence viewers to the property and what the fence viewers do is...they just decide where the fence is located and usually it is right on the property line,” she said. “They decide the type of fence they're going to put in, and that's usually based on what is in the neighbourhood, and then the next thing they would decide is the percentage of the cost.”

Four citizens were elected as livestock viewers. Haché said livestock viewers visit farms when livestock are killed by wolves or coyotes.

“They decide on the value of the chicken or cattle,” she said. “We (the municipality) would reimburse the farmer and then we would get reimbursement from the Ministry of Agriculture. It's a service we provide to the farmers.”

Five residents were also appointed to the committee of adjustment/sign variance committee, which members have the authority to grant relief from all zoning and sign by-laws.
