The Nickel District Conservation Authority (NDCA) is warning residents that, due to record temperatures and a major meltdown of the snowpack, watercourses and major drainage channels are very full with fast flowing water.

The smaller watercourses such as Junction Creek and Whitson Creek have reacted more quickly.

If the additional forecast rain is received, combined with the continuing well above normal temperatures, water levels and flows will continue to rise. Where ice cover still exists, it could be lifted by the increased water levels and flows. Residents living in low-lying, known problem areas, must monitor developing condtions very closely, said a news release.

The general public is being reminded to avoid all areas where there is fast flowing, cold water, and to stay away from creek and river banks. Also, ice cover in most areas will be very unstable and dangerous. Dams that are open and releasing water must also be avoided as the discharge amounts will increase.

Residents experiencing a problem with overland water should phone the city at 3-1-1, 24 hours a day.
