Nickel Belt MPP Shelley Martel wants the province to protect healthcare workers from pandemics.

The NDP health critic said health care workers risked their lives to save other during the 2002 SARS crisis and the government owes it to them to ensure their safety.

“The McGuinty government’s laissez-faire approach to safety continues to put workers at grave risk,” she said in a news release.

Although Martel is criticizing the Liberals, Ernie Eves and the Conservatives were in power when the SARS outbreak happened.

Martel is reacting to the SARS commissions' final report, which blasted the government "for failing to protect the lives of front-line hospital workers who were in close contact with SARS patients."

The report also says Ontario Law requires anyone using an N-95 respirator be properly trained, few hospitals complied with the law while others denied its existence.

The NDP is demanding properly fitted respirators and safety masks become mandatory and available to all front-line health care workers.
