Need relief from the heat? Here are the services available

The City of Greater Sudbury has extended certain services today in order to help keep people cool in the midst of the day plunging into the depths of a heat wave

In today’s scorching heat, the City of Greater Sudbury is extending services to help keep people cool.

Lifeguard services have been extended at the Bell Park Main Beach and Moonlight Beach on Ramsey Lake to 9 p.m. from their usual 7 p.m. 

The balance of city beaches with lifeguards on duty will remain open until 7 p.m. 

Libraries

The majority of Greater Sudbury Public Library branches will remain open until 8 p.m. as cool places to visit this evening, though some in-branch services may not be available.

Affected libraries include: 

  • Main Library (Mackenzie)
  • Azilda Gilles Pelland Library
  • Capreol Library & Citizen Service Centre
  • Chelmsford Library & Citizen Service Centre
  • Dowling Library & Citizen Service Centre
  • Garson Library & Citizen Service Centre
  • Levack / Onaping Library
  • Lively Library & Citizen Service Centre
  • New Sudbury Library
  • South End Library

Other branches will be open during their regular hours, whose details can be found online at sudburylibraries.ca.

Community Centres, Arenas and Pools

Recreational swims are available at the following times and locations today:

  • Gatchell Pool: 6:30-7:30 p.m. (all ages); 8:30-9:30 p.m. (16+)
  • Nickel District Pool: 2-3 p.m. (all ages)

Arena hours are as follows today:

  • Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex – open until 11 p.m.
  • McClelland Community Centre and Arena (Copper Cliff) – open until 10 p.m.
  • T.M. Davies Community Centre and Arena (Lively) – open until 9 p.m.

Other recreational facilities will be open during their regular hours, with more details available at greatersudbury.ca/play/recreational-facilities.

The city’s 15 splash pads are open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., with more information available at greatersudbury.ca/splashpads for locations. These are unsupervised water play areas, and parents/guardians are required to supervise their children at all times.

Residents Requiring Additional Assistance

City and community outreach teams will provide support to homeless and vulnerable populations as part of their regular outreach program, including providing water and transportation to services as needed.

The outdoor drinking water fountain is open at Memorial Park and a water refill station is available outside the Sudbury Community Arena.

Seniors and residents who require assistance can call 311 to discuss their situation.
