Caring for an elderly loved one can be a lot of work, and Sudbury's Northern Caregiving Services wants to help ease the workload.
Sudbury is homebase for Northern Caregiving Services, which opened for business in Sudbury on July 1 and in North Bay last week, where three personal support workers (PSW) serve clients in the Gateway City. Northern Caregiving employs 13 PSWs in Sudbury.
Owner Jamie Organ said the agency offers a variety of services that can be personalized to meet clients' needs and preferences, and sets itself apart with a thorough hiring process.
"Our interview process is pretty rigorous, we believe in having a high-quality service, and to have that you hire high-quality people," said Organ. "It's more than just what's on your resume. Personality is a big part of it because this is a job where you're interacting with people on a daily basis."
The company asks for six personal references during the interview process and they contact each reference.
"Sometimes people will list a person as a reference and not even tell the person they're doing it," said Organ. "We want to be extra sure that interviewees are being thorough because we're dealing with people's lives."
Northern Caregiving Services offers home care services seven days a week, 365 days a year and all caregivers are graduated Personal Support Workers (PSW) with an Ontario College Diploma.
Services offered include, companionship care, respite care, personal support and housekeeping.
"We also work in pediatrics, so anyone under the age of 16," said Organ. "This could be someone with a disability or someone who has been injured."
The majority of their client base however is people needing geriatric care.
"It's our biggest demand right now," said Organ. "In a lot of cases, the patient's family does live here in town but they're just unable to look after them, so we're here to try to make their lives easier."
