Transportation Minister Kathleen Wynne was on hand for the official opening of the realignment of the Killarney ‘S’ Curve on Highway 69 Aug. 11.

The road was opened to traffic on July 27.

“This $29 million investment signals our commitment to continue the important work happening on Highway 69,” Wynne said, in a press release.

“Funding infrastructure of this kind promotes long-term economic development, job creation and most importantly, driver safety.”

The project involved realigning four kilometers of Highway 69 that followed a twisting route known as the Killarney “S” Curve.

It also included the construction of four new bridges -- two at Lovering Creek and two at Lovering Lake Road.

This section will be part of a new four-lane alignment of Highway 69 to be put into service when the current expansion project from Estaire is completed in summer 2012.

“Our government has listened and responded to northerners demanding that Highway 69 be expanded and improved for the sake of driver safety,” Sudbury MPP Rick Bartolucci said.

“Our ongoing investment has made the expansion of Highway 69 a priority undertaking that is promoting economic development and job creation.”
