Nickel Belt Liberals call nomination meeting

The federal Liberal riding association in Nickel Belt has set April 21 as the date members will choose a new candidate to run in the next federal election.

The federal Liberal riding association in Nickel Belt has set April 21 as the date members will choose a new candidate to run in the next federal election.

Longtime Nickel Belt MP Ray Bonin announced last year he will not run in the next election, and a Liberal candidate needs to be chosen to run for his seat.

The nomination meeting will be held at L'Ecole Secondaire Franco-Cite in Sturgeon Falls from 10 am to 2 pm and at Confederation Secondary School in Val Caron from 4 pm to 9 pm.

There was a flurry of interest in the nomination, but the field has narrowed recently.

Only Verner resident Sylvain Beaudry, former city councillor Louise Portelance and West Nipissing resident Paul Finley are left in the race.

Another former city councillor, Lynne Reynolds, recently pulled out of the nomination and threw her support behind Beaudry.

Chelmsford lawyer Gerard Guimond has also pulled out of the race. He said the nomination race was called too quickly and he wasn't given enough time to sell Liberal party memberships.

Bonin's executive assistant, Shawn Murphy, was also interested in the nomination, but pulled out for family reasons.
